September 2019 Volunteer of the Month - Laurie
This month we would like to take the time to thank one of our newer yet, amazingly dedicated, volunteers. Laurie has been a huge asset to this organization and we are so glad she found us! A little bit about Laurie:
“I grew up in Cambridge, Ohio and moved to Dayton in 1991 for college. I graduated from Wright State University with a B.S. in Environmental Health Science and a M.S in Aquatic Toxicology and went on to do environmental work at Ohio EPA and currently with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Cincinnati. I live in Dayton with my two rescues, Chaco and Gizmo.
When I’m not working, I like to kayak, hike, travel, garden, listen to live music and go to concerts. I’m the type of person who is pretty much up for anything and love adventures. I also love to laugh and help others, especially the ones who need us most. I’ve always had a strong connection to animals, especially dogs, large and small, from a young age. I have always taken in animals and found them homes on my own and I contemplated fostering formally for a rescue for a long time but didn’t think I could due to my commute, travel, and packed schedule. One day, a friend and Paw Patrol foster told me about all the opportunities available through Paw Patrol to help out and I learned about this thing called “temporary foster”. This intrigued me so I decided to attend the foster orientation meeting at the end of June. If you know me, you know I am never early to anything, but somehow I arrived an hour early and ended up attending both the volunteer and foster orientation meetings that day. I was blown away by the many ways to help, from transport to photography to bio writing, fundraising, fostering and I was hooked. I said I was going to ease into things but instead I kind of jumped on in! My first gig was transporting “Inky, Pinky and Clyde” from Lexington, KY to their foster parents… and then Bambi…and then I found myself helping out with Nemo and got my foster dog Luci, who was adopted a short three weeks later! It’s been a very active few months for me here at Paw Patrol and I couldn’t be happier!
So, why do I do this? I guess to quote one of my favorite bands, “If you have love in your heart let it show while you can” and I love dogs, more than people sometimes and definitely more than my day job ”
